How do we make a Christmas menu?

In order to “set up” our ideal menu, we must first answer some questions:
1. How many guests will be seated at the table?
2. Are there any dietary peculiarities that you should take into account?
3. How much time do you have to spend on purchasing your materials?
4. How much time do you have for the cooking?
5. How much money do you have and/or want to spend on food? This will determine the answer to the last question.
6. How many dishes do you want to serve on the table? A Christmas dinner should includes at least 3 to 5 different plates.

The right order of ingredients and flavors

There are some golden rules regarding the order of the dishes that we will serve on the table, so it would be good to know them, before choosing the recipes.

1. The intensity of aromas and flavors must increase gradually, from dish to dish. This means that we start from lighter flavors to move to more robust, complex and heavy, with more complex aromas.
2. Fish comes first, followed by poultry and then red meat. In this way, the first rule is ensured, as well as the taste continuity. Imagine for examble that you are being served a stew with some red wine first, followed by a light fricassee with fish and dry white wine. You obviously wouldn’t like it, so don’t do it to your guests either.
3. The appetizer can be served in the living room. If you decide not to go straight to the table, you can serve an appetizer and a glas of wine as a first welcome.
4. The salad is served either after the first course or at the end of the meal. Of course, if you want, you can have it on the table throughout the meal, but if you want to follow the standard, it is served between the first and the main course to cleanse the mouth of other flavors. If you still want to serve cheeses at the end of the meal, choose to serve the salad after the main course.
5. You will decide how many and which dishes you will serve on the table. Choose what you love and you know to cook. You might just want a salad and two mains with their side dishes. Or you might prefer lighter flavors and choose between starters, salads and first courses. Or even go the long project of five or even six dishes.

 Preparing the perfect Christmas dinner is a labor of love that requires careful planning, attention to detail, and a dash of creativity. By following these steps and incorporating your own personal touch, you can create a memorable Christmas menu that will delight your guests and create lasting memories.

French Onion Soup – A Classic Winter Soup Recipe

Winter is the perfect time to enjoy delicious and comforting soups. French Onion Soup is a classic winter soup that is known for its rich flavors and comforting warmth. Here’s a simple recipe for French Onion Soup that you can try:

French Onion Soup Classic Recipe

Ingredients:

4 large onions, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 cups beef broth
1 cup dry white wine (optional)
1 bay leaf
2 sprigs thyme
Salt and black pepper to taste
Baguette slices
Gruyere cheese, grated

Instructions:

In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.

Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Pour in the beef broth and white wine, if using. Add the bay leaf and thyme sprigs. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for about 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

While the soup is simmering, preheat your broiler. Place the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast them until golden brown.

Ladle the soup into ovenproof bowls, leaving some space at the top. Top each bowl with a couple of toasted baguette slices.

Sprinkle a generous amount of grated Gruyere cheese over the top of each bowl.

Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.

Carefully remove the bowls from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
